Brake discs are an essential part of the vehicles braking system and are crucial in bringing your vehicle to a stop quickly and safely. Driving with worn brake discs can affect the braking performance which can put you, your passengers and other drivers in danger should they fail.

When your vehicle has a service or MOT, brake discs will be checked, however it is recommended that your brakes are checked every 10,000 miles. On avaerage they will require replacement around 25,000-30,000 miles. It is important that you are aware of signs that a replacement is needed.

Unusual noises when apply the brakes

When you apply the brake pedal you will notice a screeching or scraping noise. This is noticeable immediately and is a sign that the brake discs are worn, warped or damaged. 

Increased stopping distance

You may notice that it takes longer for the vehicle to come to a stop. When the brake pedal is applied you might feel vibrations through the pedal, if you continue to drive and the condition worsens this can prevent the pedal from interacting with the brake disc completely preventing the vehicle from stopping completely.

Vibrations

Any damage or wear to a brake disc can cause you to feel vibrations throughout the car and not just the brake pedal. As soon as you notice any out of ordinary vibrations you should book your vehicle in for a brake inspection.

When going on long journeys most of us will check tyre pressures, fluids headlights but what about brake discs?

Checking your vehicles brake discs for visible damage especially for longer journeys is a habit that you should adopt. Check the brake discs for any deep grooves or score marks and if you spot any you should consider getting them checked over.
